A playful duet that blends two flutes into a single “super-instrument,” the piece turns tight coordination and shared gestures into a musical game, creating the illusion of one performer split between two players.

In Duetto, I sought to create one “super-flute” from two flautists. This idea was inspired by a video I saw on YouTube of two violinists seemingly playing as if they were one player in Eugène Ysaÿe’s Sonata for Two Violins. If I hadn’t actually seen the video, I don’t think I would have been able to tell there were two performers. Unlike most of my work thus far, this short work is mostly playful in nature, and meant to be a kind of game between the two flautists.
